Run Home to Mama: The Bug Pages

It's a Galley When It's Mobile

One of the more important functions of our Bug-out trailer is meal preparation. So a full 30% of the interior space goes to food storage and cooking and cleanup. No surprise there. We all love to eat. In an emergency situation, the ability to possess and prepare food is huge.

One of my design goals is two full days of self-containment. That means being able to handle food with no outside help for two full days. That doesn't sound like much, but it is six meals. And we all know how we like our in-between snacks!

Keeping all that clean and orderly is important too. Washing dishes and storage for pots, pans, plates, silverware, cooking utensiles is all important.

I ordered this sink originally thinking it would go in The Bug. It wound up in the house, and our old kitchen sink was relegated to the trailer. That actually was a benefit, because the old sink is shallower than the new one, which leaves that much more room under the sink. Bonus.

This refrigerator/freezer is really nice. It runs on 12VDC, and uses roughly between 35 and 65 watts. You can select either side to be a freezer or refrigerator, or both if you want. We set the larger compartment as our freezer.

The stove is amazingly nice and works really well. It is made for outdoor cooking/baking, so it is light and gets hot on the outside because it does not have the insulation the range in your house kitchen has. These stoves do not have a thermostatic gas valve. You have to babysit the temperature during cooking. That is NOT like your home oven.

I made special provisions for using the stove indoors if needed. I made sure to have plenty of open space around the stove. All of its under-side venting is open and exposed. There is nothing directly above it to over-heat. And I have a fresh-air vent in the floor beneath it. I installed two smoke detectors and one CO detector. So we open a window and/or turn on the exhaust fan and we cook in The Bug when the weather outside is frightful.

The Galley Gallery

The galley works as intended, and is wife-approved, so that is a thing that works for sure.
